Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword appears in your content compared to the total word count. While it's no longer a primary ranking factor, understanding your keyword usage helps you write naturally and avoid over-optimization.

What is Keyword Density?

Keyword density is calculated as: (Keyword Count / Total Words) × 100

For example, if your keyword appears 10 times in a 1,000-word article, your keyword density is 1%.

Recommended Density

Most SEO experts suggest keeping keyword density between 1-2% for your primary keyword. Higher than 3% may trigger over-optimization signals.

How to Use the Tool

Step 1: Paste Your Content

Copy and paste your article, blog post, or page content into the text area. The tool analyzes plain text—HTML tags are ignored.

Step 2: Enter Target Keyword (Optional)

Add your primary keyword to get a specific density calculation for that term. This helps you see if you're using it enough—or too much.

Step 3: Review Word Frequency

See which words appear most often in your content. Look for unintentional repetition or missed keyword opportunities.

Step 4: Check 2-Word Phrases

The tool also shows common two-word phrases. This helps you identify natural keyword variations you're using.

Keyword Density Best Practices

  • Write for humans first — If it sounds unnatural, it probably is
  • Use variations — Include synonyms and related terms, not just exact match
  • Focus on context — Google understands topics, not just keywords
  • Check competitors — Analyze top-ranking pages to see their density
  • Avoid keyword stuffing — Over 3% density looks spammy to users and Google
